Brownie Points for You Atlanta

Y’all may or may not have noticed how good I was with keeping up with the daily photo challenge in the beginning of May. Then lots and lots happened and I became incredibly busy! Too busy to find a creative photo opp every day. No regrets though! I currently have all my engines running at full speed and am pulling strong – but more about the hustle bustle in a different post.

Before the whirlwind picked up and tossed me around we had a fantastic weekend in Atlanta. We both shamefully have had a bit of a bad opinion of Atlanta (The traffic! Gahhh! The weather! Blahhh! Lame town! Bleehhh!) The city gained tons of brownie points during this trip though and we both had a really fun time! What made it easy to go even though we felt so blah about Hotlanta was that the hotel didn’t cost a penny! The nice thing about having to travel for work are of course the frequent flyer miles and hotel points and so we used the latter and booked ourselves into a historical beauty right in the heart of downtown. High 5 to our foxiness!

We kicked off the weekend at an awesome Irish pub near by. Don’t think I had ever seen that large of a Guinness mix selection! Two of zee boyfriend’s friends joined us and we headed to the ballpark to see some Braves baseball. I hadn’t been in eight years and it was a blast. Love their signature tomahawk chop! Our friends treated us to a giant bratwurst and the Braves treated us to a win and some spectacular fireworks in the rain. Nothing like running back to the car in squelching shoes! Great fun! Brownie points Atlanta!

Saturday morning we checked out the Delta block party. Whoop whoop! Classic cars, airplanes, life music, free food and drinks. Not bad at all!!

Have to say, my personal favorites were probably the retro flight attendant uniforms. How fabulous!

After some relaxing at our hotel we met up for drinks with one my girlfriends and her husband at the swanky W hotel. Can I please hire the W’s interior designer for our home?!

Another high-light was checking out the original Ru Sans sushi restaurant. They have a branch in our town that I call “The Happy Place” and so I’d been dying to check out their first restaurant in Atlanta. Oh it was so much fun! (If you consider yelling waiters fun…) Had some great sushi and enjoyed cruising around MidTown. Brownie points Atlanta!

And finally, more brownie points on Sunday. We walked through the Olympic park (remember those games from, geez, 17 years ago now?! #FeelingOld) to the Georgia Aquarium. It was friggin’ amazing (aside from the Dolphin show, that was extremely corny). Huuuge sea creatures and we got to pet sting rays and anemones. Great fun!

So yeah, if you have a chance to go to Atlanta, do it! We enjoyed our weekend in the city tremendously and I think we’ll go back some time soon to check out some more hopefully brownie slam dunk point worthy sights. Sorry HOTlanta for totally underestimating you. Our bad.

Stars – Photo A Day 10

I am really enjoying this Photo A Day challenge. Thinking of a good photo opportunity every day is actually fun and I really enjoy writing a bit about some of the photos on here.

So May 10th photo theme of the day was “Stars”. I do love stars (chunks of rock in the sky that is, not necessarily hyped-up starlets of Hollywood)! We were on this wonderful road-trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon (sooooooo awesome! Go see it if you haven’t yet) and on the way back from hiking in the Grand Canyon National Park we kept craning our necks to see the amazing night sky. It’s something. The desolateness of the desert and the absence of any human-made light sources made this a very humbling experience. Just us three friends and a million stars shining above us in the sky.
And then somebody mentioned scorpios and we all got the heck back into the car and focused on moose on the road instead of constellations in the sky. Ah yes, the wild wild west.

I Bought This! Photo A Day #1

20130501-203117.jpg

A couple of my Instagram contacts participate in a monthly photo-a-day challenge quite regularly and every time I see their photos (once the month is well under way) I think – oh I should do that some day! Let’s be honest most of the time I’m more operating under the motto “Ain’t no body got time for that!”  when it comes to self-imposed online chores (I will never be a level 100 FarmVille farmer…) but this is 31 days. I can do that! A fun project hopefully more than a chore! If you want to participate, Chantelle over here came up with the plan!

Today’s photo theme is “I BOUGHT THIS!”. Not having bought anything today made this one a bit challenging so I thought about what I had spent money on in the past that is still very significant for me…. My Coach purse that I got on super clearance (SCOOORE!) or my cute little German car that takes me to work every day came to mind. Even my sweet dog that I bought from a farmers couple. But in hind sight, some of the best dollars spent were on my MBA degree that brought me to North Carolina nine years ago.

My grad school experience has made me meet some of my dearest friends, introduced me to the wonderful city of Charlotte that I wouldn’t mind calling my forever home, given me tools to succeed in business, and last but not least has made getting my friggin‘ visas and hopefully eventual green card so much easier.

So yes, of course I would have preferred a free masters degree, but in hind sight, that was money well spent and in comparison to some other US grad school programs, that was actually pretty awesome deal. 🙂 Go Falcons!

SoCal Round-Up

Oh how wonderful it was to get away from Charlotte’s pollen-loaded spring and spend a week in breezy Southern California. Granted it was for work, this trade show went super smoothly and we had a few hours off as well. A piece of freight went missing but hey, this wasn’t my first rodeo so Plan B went into effect and all was well. Disaster averted!

I always enjoy going to this SoCal show. No I don’t get to experience the flashy & fancy OC tourist experience and there is never any beach time but there is something about the palm trees and the exotic (for this German anyway) flowers that puts me in a good mood. Appears to work on everyone out there, too. People seem perpetually happy and friendly. Oh and have I mentioned the low humidity? My hair seems to jump out of its frizz and stand straight like a soldier as soon as I get off the airplane! Love it!

This was my 4th year there and I still have not made it to DisneyLand but I had a view of it from my hotel (that’s pretty cool for trade show hotel living) and we enjoyed strolling around Downtown Disney one evening and had dinner at ESPN zone. Actually a pretty cool place with OK food. I suppose you go for the sports competitions not a cook-off.

Going as smoothly as the rest of the trade show, dismantle was done midday Sunday and our local rep there took us to this little outdoor outlet mall The Block @ Orange.

The boys lingered after lunch at the prettiest art deco arcade to play video games and I got to do some shopping! 😀 Got to refill my recently decluttered closet… You have no idea how thrilled I was to find a pair of mint pants at H&M for about $20. Who cares if they go out of style next season?! 😉

So long SoCal, I’ll see you again next spring and maybe 2014 will be the year that I’ll get to say hi to Mickey Mouse.
