A Visit from Anke

Freak Show - Day 138OK first of all, what you’ve all been waiting for… me licking my elbow. That just sounds wrong….

Anyway… Thursday night after a quick trip to the grocery store I picked up my middle sister Anke from the airport. Driving there was fun, I kept humming “In The Ghetto” and sure enough the gas station on West Blvd had 5 police cars there with lights on and a lot of uhm ghetto inhabitants there. Fun! So I took Anke home on the less ghetto road and we went uptown to look around. Not much was going on there but we grabbed a few slices of pizza at Fuel and then took some photos of uptown and later the skyline. Anke was quite impressed by the Queencity compared to her town in CT. Well, yeah sorry but Charlotte rocks ;-).

Friday after a skype session with the other 3/5 of our family we headed to Charleston. Love love love love love that city! After checking into our hotel and being escorted to our room by two huge black dudes (scaary) to fix our security latch we headed back across the bridge, parked the car in the middle of no where for free and strolled around the streets. We did some souvenir shopping and I got a milk foamer (yay) and then we had dinner at the Charleston Crab House. This place used to be FANTASTIC. I’d say now it’s good. Not amazing but still quite alright. Might look for some other place to eat next time I’m in town. Anke had forgotten her IDs in CT so we hung out at Starbucks for a bit before she made me buy some beer at the grocery store which we then enjoyed while watching ice dancing and Bridget Jones. Awesome!

Saturday we headed to Patriot’s Point, which was on our side of the island anyway and chilled out there for a while (as in gift shop and food). A little boat took us to Ft. Sumter, the little island and fortress where the American Civil War started. We weren’t really in awe but did enjoy the sandbank there and I dare say we got a tan! A speedy drive back up north to Charlotte (well as speedy as you can be on a two lane highway in the US….) and Charleston was gone. So sad! Driving was kind of funny. Imagine two little girls in a tiny car zooming by and then imagine this tiny car at a truck stop trying to find diesel gas (because that’s mostly used for trucks here and not every gas station has diesel and they have separate pumps). Must have been hilarious looking. I did record time, less than three hours of driving. Wow!

I treated Anke to RuSans for sushi and then we drove uptown to meet with Manuel, Massimo, Giorgio, Ash and Luca for some desert and then a chillout beer at the Irish pub. A nice, relaxing night. The night was over too soon though as my upstairs neighbor was walking marching around her apartment way too early. So we got up and went grocery shopping and Starbucksing and then started cooking. We made deviled eggs and then potatoes, ham and broccoli with sauce hollandaise and a little salad. Birgit, Ash and Luca came over to eat and just as we finished eating it was already time to take Anke back to the airport. Very sad :(. But she sounded pretty convinced that she’d be back soon to hang out in the queen city and with my nice friends. Oh-kay. That’d be nice! 🙂

Back from Vegas

OK so I’m long back from Vegas and of course I haven’t had the time (or didn’t want to take the time) to update my little diary here.
Vegas started out with a very stressful day here at work but oh well. Had to pick up some last minute things from a big home-improvement store local to the area so by the time I got back home I had to drive to the airport instead of waiting or a cab. It’s a good thing I only live 15 minutes away from it. In fact that is sooooooo convenient, it almost feels like going to the train station in Germany. The flight was good and after checking into the hotel I met with my two co-workers and one of them was nice enough to walk the strip with me since I didn’t feel like standing around a casino. We walked all the way to the Mandalay Bay from the Imperial Palace and back (must have been like 6km in total). So nice! I was very impressed with all the nice hotels in Vegas!
The trade show was fantastic, too. I had such a good time talking to people and explaining our product to them. I love love love my job. I helped generating a lot of leads and it was just a very nice experience. The best thing though was all the good food. My colleagues must think I’m some sort of crazy person as I kept talking about food and demanded to eat all the time. We ate at the Venetian twice, then at Caesar’s Palace, and at the buffets at Paris and the Bellagio. Soooo yummy. I think I gained about 10pounds ;-). Luckily I did a lot of walking around though so that got it down to like 9 ;-).
I also really enjoyed all the free entertainment like the fountains in front of the Bellagio or the volcano at The Mirage but the best were all the nice hotels. Yeah, of course everything in Vegas is fake but I expected it and the only things that bugged me were the guys handing out all these cards for call girls and the fact that you had to walk through the casinos all the time to get to your hotel room, which made my eyes water. Though the newer hotels were much better with their air filtration.
The flight back was good and somewhat short and once I got back here I headed straight to Chadi’s birthday party. Great food at Luce’s and then a night of fun at HOM until 3:30. Afterwards 4 of us went back to my place for some wine and loads of laughter and at 6 I finally went to bed. What a fun party.
In the afternoon we went to brunch and then just hung out at Chadi’s and chilled, ate some cake and watched the superbowl. I was so happy that the Giants won. Yay!
The week so far has been really busy, too. Loads of stuff to do at work. I stayed until 8pm the other day because I had to finish something but luckily I love love love my job. I feel really quesy about the new visa. Ugh. Not good. I am just sooo worried because I sooooo love my job and Charlotte and I can’t picture myself in a German company where everyone is like Herr Mueller, Frau Meyer…. Yikes!
So Monday I was over at Vanessa’s place and she cooked the best risotto ever. Soooo good! Tuesday I cooked, which in itself is worth mentioning in my blog as I rarely do that…, not sure what I did yesterday, prolly just relaxing, and then today I had sushi with a nice guy. Tomorrow is dinner with Stefan and let’s see whatelse the weekend will bring. I feel like I have a cold coming on – yikes!

Night night people! I miss y’all!

Back in The Queen City

So after 3 months of annoyances and worrying I finally made it back to Charlotte. I’m super happy that that worked out – though I can’t quite say I’m excited. You know it’s not like the first time I went to London and was ohhing and ahhhing over Big Ben and such but it sure feels good to be back.
The day started super early at 3:30am. Yikes! Made it to the airport in Hanover at 5, which was good because the check-in lady made me repack my suitcases. So they went from 21 and 27,5kg to 23 and 25,5kg and she let them pass. Thankfully she didn’t made me weigh my carry-on; that was another 17kg (but down from 20kg the night before!!). A quick flight to Frankfurt including a 30 minute delay once we boarded and then a loooong one to Charlotte. I had the weirdest seat neighbor. Some young, blonde Swede with a huge tattoo of a half naked woman on his arm that was chewing tobacco and then… watching THE BEAUTY & THE BEAST!! Hillarious. We didn’t really talk but the movies kept me busy and eventually we landed.
I was of course again super nervous about immigrations after that last ordeal but the officer asked me one question. That’s right, one! “So is this the first time you are travelling with this visa?” He held the stamp over my passport but then hesitated for what seemed like forever while reading some more in his computer. Nervewracking! But he hit it, my passport got the stamp and “You’re all set”. Haha! Yay! I almost had a feeling this would happen after all that crap beforehand.
All my bags made it – yay! Massimo, Giorgio, and Chadi picked me up in a tiny Golf that was filled with garbage from the old intern but somehow we all squeezed in and got some food and drinks before I could convince them that I was wayyy too tired to do anything and they dropped me off at my new place. I even managed to unpack the majority of my luggage before falling into bed.
Well today I’m gonna have to go shopping. For some reason there are only 2 huge pots left – not sure what happened to the small ones and I had to throw away some dish towels because they were left in the laundry machine and were quite disgusting when I discovered them. Yuk! Whatever, SuperTarget here I come! 😀

Packing

One more night in my bed and then I’m off for a year. I started packing last night and was super happy to learn that I can use my pretty big trolley as a carry-on. It fits US Airways’s baggage rules perfectly. I already have my pants, t-shirts, long sleave shirts, my blouses and cardigans packed up in one suitcase and I still have some space there! So now basically it’s only my skirts, underwear, PJs, jackets, shoes and purses left. Well and some non-clothes items… But I’m actually confident that everything will fit somehow. 🙂
